Ikko Restaurant in Torrance, CA

Aside from the small cramped quarters inside this dark secluded restaurant, it’s hard to believe it’s located in an unglamourous strip mall adjacent to the bustling traffic of Hawthorne Blvd.

I was introduced to Ikko by some Japanese friends from the area who were taking an equally calculated risk eating here for the first time. Reservations are not required, but they’re certainly helpful as the staff can combine tables for larger groups.

Perhaps Ikko can best be described as a modern izakaya and sushi bar. I wouldn’t go so far as to call it fusion as plenty of menu items don’t typically appeal to the western palate such as marinated octopus suckers or dried salted fish bone appetizers. This is made even more evident by the high prevalence of Japanese clientele.

The regular menu is supplemented by a daily specials attachment, sometimes as thick as 3 or 4 additional pages. While the static menu items are excellent, the truly intriguing dishes are found on the simple printed addition. At the same time, some of these are unfortunately sold out even early in the evening.

Each menu item is presented as a dainty work of art making up a comestible masterpiece.

Sukiyaki for dinner

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of visiting with a good friend. She’s one of the few people I know who will go completely out of her way to make me feel comfortable while in her home. Her hospitality always includes making hot green tea and offering snacks. Almost every time I visit, she’ll end up making dinner. This totally blows me away cause most of my friends would just suggest we go out for a bite. Not only that, but she gave me a choice: sukiyaki or shabu shabu.

The only type of sukiyaki I’ve tried has been a homestyle version my Thai friend made for me. I’ve eaten a ton of it, and I’m not a huge fan of the soybean sauce that’s added to the mix. Instead of assuming the Japanese version would be similar and boycott it, I threw caution to the wind and chose sukiyaki for dinner. We were already at Mitsuwa anyway, so she picked up all the right ingredients.

Asameshi Maeda Honpo Ramen @ Mitsuwa

Posted in Legendary Ramen Fair on March 7th, 2008 by BB – 1 Comment

What a healthy start to the day. Roll out of bed, drink some hot tea, and head over to Mitsuwa for some ramen. As the second and last vendor in the Legendary Ramen Fair at the Torrance location, Asameshi was dishing out noodles with lightning speed. Every inch of the food court was packed with diners, so I retreated to the overflow seating area around the corner.
